Snow and Ice Year Round

Southcentral Alaska is the place to be able to access large glaciers and blue ice of all kinds, all year round. There are countless glaciers within a few hours of the Anchorage International Airport that provide excellent filming locations to meet a variety of needs.

From filming tidewater glaciers calving shopping mall-sized chunks into the ocean, to winter catalogue shoots looking for stable ice and snow in the summer, there are a variety of locations that we can help you choose between, based on your crew size, budget, and the look you are searching for.

Lastly, working on a living glacier can be dangerous and it is important to make sure your crew’s safety is first priority. We can connect you with the local safety and risk management professionals that can make sure your glacier location is responsibly managed.

Filming locations in alpine environments can lend big views, large expanses, open tundra

Due to its high northern latitude, Alaska has a “treeline” of about 1500 feet above sea level. This means that if you are looking for open mountain shots, without trees or bushes in the frame, you can find it way closer to sea level in this state than in areas in the lower 48 (or contiguous United States.) This can make access much easier and more affordable.

Although Alaska has few roads, almost all of the them are stunning and many of our state’s main highways wind through alpine ecosystems, tundra, and high mountain peaks. The low-to-the-ground plants that grow above treeline, known as 'tundra,’ create an austere and dramatic feel and allow for long views behind the subject, and can make perfect backdrops for catalogue shoots.

Coastal Rainforest Filming Locations

Many do not realize that the big mountains nearest to Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, rise up right out of the ocean. This coastal geography creates an climate that allows for America’s northern most rainforest ecosystem, all within driving distance of Anchorage.

In the summer this area is lush with greens and blues, and the forests have huge old growth hemlocks filtering in summer sunlight. Lush moss and ferns make this region’s coastal forests the perfect destination for an ancient forest look.

Ocean based film production

In addition to its coastal forests, Alaska is a state of strong ocean going-culture and many coastal towns, with impressive on water locations. The state has more coastline than the rest of the country put together and this coastline is varied and incredibly diverse, including winding fjords, beautiful beaches and intricate tucked away bays and coves. Commercial fishing is an important part of the state’s economy, marine wildlife abounds, and tidewater glaciers allow you to get closer to huge walls of blue ice than glaciers you can access on land.

Intertidal zones and pebbly beaches around the state can offer stunning backdrops and many are right off main roads, making for simple access. Boat based productions can be made simple with the right contacts and we can help you narrow in on the area that could best suit your needs.

Alaskan culture + one of a kind individuals…

Alaska has a lot to offer culturally that is likely invisible to someone who has not spent time here. The state has thousands of years of Indigenous history and Alaska Native culture continues to thrive throughout the state. If Indigenous culture is something your production is interested in, it is important to make sure you are working with Indigenous contacts and are informed on Alaska Native history. We can help connect you with the right people to make this happen.

In addition to its rich Indigenous cultural heritage, Alaska offers many quirky communities and individuals that came to this state because it would allow them to live lives impossible anywhere else. Whether that’s a family homesteading in the wilderness, professional athletes living their dreams, or entrepreneurs creating businesses that can thrive in our remote state, Alaska is notable for its people, and the crazy stuff they get up to.
